A typical day starts at Happy School...
As one enters the G Block gate of DLF Phase-I in Gurgaon in the morning between 8:00 AM and 8:30 AM one sees a horde of children—between the ages of 4 and 14 years–rushing to the Happy School premises. None of the 350 children want to be late. As soon as the bell rings, they rush to their respective class-groups and get ready for their morning prayers, exercise, story-of-the-day session, and milk shake. By 9:00 AM they are all set for their lessons in real earnest...after two hours of study, kids are given snacks ranging from aloo-purie and halwa, to sandwiches and fruit, buns, cakes, porridge, and rice (all provided by voluntary organizations)...another few hours of studies and sports and the kids are ready to pack up for the day—with happy and smiling faces.
Special focus on health...
The Happy School involves itself in the general well being and health of the students. From time to time various doctors and institutes hold free medical check-up camps, dental camps, eye camps, and immunization programs. The school also arranges special medical support for kids with acute medical problems. For instance, the school recently provided reading glasses to several kids with weak eye sight; two brothers who had congenital cataract were successfully operated upon; one child was operated for polio; one girl is being treated for tuberculosis, and another for epilepsy. One child is undergoing treatment involving multiple surgeries for polio correction. Recently the school organized Anaemia Test Camp for the kids. Since most of them were found anaemic, they were given iron tablets. Children are also given vitamin tablets and health supplements.
Recently the school started a program to create/maintain Health Cards for each kid to monitor and evaluate their health and inoculations. Starting April 2008, the school has a pediatrician coming in on a regular basis. |

The school provides much more than "just academics"...

|
Apart from regular lessons in English, Maths, Hindi, History, Geography, Physical Sciences, etc., equal emphasis is given to personal hygiene, environment, and character-building. The school has recently started typing and computer classes for the children and vocational training sessions such as painting, art work, sewing,
and cooking. The children are also taken on regular excursions and picnics. Recent excursions include visits to the New Delhi Zoo, The Rail Museum, Fun N Food village, Planetarium, bowling alley, India Habitat Center, and Qutab Minar.
School children celebrates all festivals. The entire premises wears a festive look on Eid, Diwali, Christmas, Holi,
New Year,
The Independence Day and the Republic Day. |
There is a long way to go...
Depending on the financial status of the families, the Happy School management arranges sponsors, who pay for the kids' annual tuition, regular uniforms, and books.
At the moment children who show promise are sent to regular government schools, and all attempts are made to find suitable sponsors for brilliant students who can hold their own in private schools.
The school management is however constrained to push more children to the "mainstream" due to lack of enough funds and voluntary support. |
